What’s the link between energy and CO2 and why are we being asked to save energy and cut CO2 emissions?

Every time energy is created by burning fossil fuels the process releases CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) into the atmosphere. CO2 is a ‘greenhouse gas’ and too much of it contributes to climate change and damage to our environment.
If we cut the amount of energy we use we’ll in turn be burning fewer fossil fuels which means less CO2 being released into the atmosphere and less damage to the environment.
